RACE DESCRIPTION
There are three distances to choose from:
25K (Start Time TBD): This course is Western Pack Burro Racing Ass-ociation compliant, with prizes going to the top three male and female finishers with packs.
8 Mile (Start Time TBD): This course is packs optional. Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers.
3 Mile (Start Time TBD) : This course is our "Introduction to Pack Burro Racing Course." Packs are optional on this course. You may choose to run/hike/walk this course. This distance is designed to introduce newcomers to the sport in an environment that is less competitive than some of the longer distances. Just go out and have some fun with your burro teammate!
Please note the course will remain open to the public. Hikers, bikers, dog walkers, and other equestrians may utilize the course during the race. Please be cautious, courteous, and respectful and ensure you follow all safety signs on the course.
Starting from the northern trailhead by the gate, the course travels south on the Old Territorial Road. At the first intersection, runners will continue to head south (straight) towards Palmer Lake. After 1.5 miles, runners in the three mile will turn around and make their way back toward the starting line, but will make a right turn to the finish line. The three mile race course is approximately 3.2 miles. After 3.5 miles, 8 milers and 25K runners will turn left onto the Kipps loop and run up and over the saddle, which is the high point of the course at 7,400 feet. The next three miles are all downhill to the eight mile finish. Runners will make a right on the Greenland Trail at seven miles. 25K runners will run to their turn-around point and then follow the Greenland Trail back to the Old Territorial Road where they will veer left and follow the above route again to the finish line at the shelter area. Keep at eye out for signs directing you where to go.
The entire course is run on dirt trails. With wide, smooth double track trails, the Greenland Open Space Pack Burro Races are very fast courses and also very beginner friendly. There will be one aid station at mile 7.5 (the turnaround) for the 25K runners. There will be no aid stations in the 8 or 3 mile races. The aid station will provide Gatorade drink and water.
TIME LIMIT: The finish line will close at TBD.
All finishers will receive a prize of some sort.
